  • Lt. Gov. Austin Davis stopped at Swarthmore Borough Hall Saturday to express support for U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-5, of Swarthmore as she seeks her fifth full term to Congress.
  • Davis included Swarthmore on his tour of southeastern Pennsylvania on Saturday where he made stops in Philadelphia and Montgomery County as well.
  • “We have a real opportunity to make history,” he said after arriving in Swarthmore to a nomination petition signing party for Scanlon and the Democratic state endorsed candidates. “Pennsylvania again is the epicenter of everything that’s going to happen in this country. We have four congressional seats here in Pennsylvania that if we flip, we will finally flip the U.S. Congress and put a check on Donald Trump.”
  • He said Democrats have an opportunity to flip the Pennsylvania Senate and to expand the majority in the state House this election.
  • “What that means is we can finally raise the minimum wage here in Pennsylvania,” Davis said. “What that means is we can finally expand workers’ protections here in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. And we can fund SEPTA finally.”
  • Davis himself is also seeking re-election this year and spoke about how he and Gov. Josh Shapiro expanded universal free breakfast to all kids in Pennsylvania, made historic investments in education to make sure every young person has access to a quality education and worked to ensure communities are safe.
  • The lieutenant governor said this race is about the kind of world that future generations are going to inherit.
  • “I want my daughter to have the same rights that her mom came into the world with and that she’s enjoyed,” Davis said. “I want my daughter to have every opportunity to live the American dream, whichever that looks like for her and that’s the same thing that I want for each of your children.”
  • He then encouraged the crowd to sign petitions, take some home to get family members to sign, to knock on doors in the summer and to make phone calls in the fall and work a poll in November.
  • “If we do that, if we lean in, we won’t wake up the next day and wonder where our country is headed,” Davis said. “We will know where it’s headed and it’ll be in a more prosperous direction.”
